How to get get admission to IIT

The Indian Institute of Technologies are the autonomous institution for technology, management, and other courses. Getting admission into the IITs is a dream for every student but it is very tough. The aspirant must clear various examinations conducted every year for admission. The courses offered by IITs are B. Tech., B. S., B. Arch., B. Des., M. Tech., M.B.A., M. S., M. Sc., M. Arch. , Ph. D., etc. There are various examinations conducted at a national level to get into any one of these courses.

IITs are the top institutions established to improve technical education in India in the year 1950. IIT Kharagpur was the first among all the IITs established. Now, there are a total of 23 IITs in India. All the IITs offer both technical and non-technical degrees.

In this article, we will be discussing how to get admission to IIT through various entrance examinations.

1. Joint Entrance Examination Advanced

The Joint Entrance Examination Advanced (JEE Advanced) is the entrance examination to get admission to IIT in the undergraduate course. To be eligible to seat into the JEE Advanced, one must clear the JEE Mains examination and to get admission one must have 75% in 10+2. The JEE Advanced paper consists of 3 parts, Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

Note: The percentage of 10+2 varies between different categories.

2. Architecture Aptitude Test

Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT) is for the students who qualify the JEE Advanced and want to study architecture in IIT. There are only two IITs namely IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee, which offer B. Arch. degree.

3. Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination

The Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination (HSEE) is for admission to the 5 years integrated Master of Arts (MA) course. The aspirants can appear for this entrance examination after 10+2.

4. Under Graduate Common Entrance Examination for Design

Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED) is the entrance examination for the admission to the B. Des. courses offered by IITs. Students from any stream (Arts, Science, Commerce, etc.) in the 10+2 level are eligible to apply for this entrance examination.

5. Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering

The Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineers (GATE) is a national level examination held every year to identify the meritorious students for admission to the postgraduate courses in Technology, Engineering, and Architecture.

6. Joint Admission Test for M. Sc.

Joint Admission Test for M. Sc. (JAM) is held every year across the country for the admission into the postgraduate courses of sciences after B. Sc.

7. Common Admission Test

Many IITs offer management courses like M.B.A. To get admission to IIT for M.B.A. courses one must clear the Common Admission Test (CAT) with a very good percentile. 

8. Common Entrance Examination for Design

Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED) is the entrance examination for admission to the postgraduate courses of design.

These all are the entrance examinations through which one can get admission to IIT. The IITs also offer degrees like Ph. D. and other short term courses. To enroll in the other courses offered by IIT one must appear in the institutional level entrance examinations.
